Saudi Arabia Is Building Faster Than It Is Branding

Something is happening in Saudi Arabia that has no modern precedent. Districts, museums, stadiums, and entire cities are being planned and built inside a decade. The construction pace is genuinely world-first. The branding pace is not, and the gap between the two is now visible to anyone paying attention.

Vision 2030 did not create demand for design. It created demand for design that can defend itself. When a project is meant to represent the country to the world, a mark that looks nice is not enough. It has to hold up next to the ambition of the thing it stands for.

Vision 2030 did not create demand for design. It created demand for design that can defend itself.

The old habit was to treat identity as the finishing touch, ordered late, judged on whether a committee liked the color. That habit does not survive the current scale. A giga-project with a placeholder brand is a stadium with a paper sign at the entrance. The building says one thing and the identity says another, and visitors feel the mismatch before they can name it.

The studios that will matter here are the ones that can sit in the room early, argue with strategy, and back every choice with a reason a decision-maker can repeat to the person above them. Taste is not enough anymore. The work has to be defensible.

This is the opportunity, and it is specific to this moment. For a generation of Saudi studios, the question is not whether there is work. There is more than anyone can handle. The question is whether the work will be built with the same rigor as the towers it will hang on.

We think it should be. A country building this fast deserves brands that can keep up, not identities that apologize for arriving last. The construction will be remembered. So will the branding, one way or the other.
